| So, how did you like the price of gasoline the last time you filled up your car or truck here on the Kenai Peninsula? |
 |
Well, I filled up my Ford truck yesterday and I didn’t like it at all. Everytime I pull up to the gas pump, I still have a hard time believing that it’s gonna cost me almost a hundred dollars if not more.
Here on the Kenai, we have one of the very highest costs, per gallon, for gasoline in the entire nation. It’s even higher than California where leaf lickers and tree huggers have demanded so many green regulations on auto fuel that their fuel is higher by far than any of the other states, except Alaska.
It’s very sad that here on the Kenai Peninsula we are charged thirty to forty cents more per gallon for gas than Anchorage. That is very sad indeed, because all the gas we buy is refined right here. That’s right. Every gallon of gas for our cars and trucks is refined right here in Nikiski, just down the road. Then the gas refined at the big Tesoro refinery must be shipped all the way to Anchorage. That is not just down the road! One would think, then, that with all those shipping charges a higher cost in Anchorage would be more than justified. But no…. it’s all turned around. Tesoro demands that their wholesale price to gas stations on the Kenai Peninsula be thirty to forty cents higher than Anchorage. Somehow drivers on the Kenai Peninsula have been chosen to pay for the shipping costs to Anchorage and to”take it in the shorts”. It’s not fair….but no one really seems to mind.
A more important question Alaskans need to ask is: why should any Alaska resident ever pay more than about $2.00 a gallon for auto gas. First of all, we are an owner state, the only one in the nation. In other words, we as Alaskans own all the crude oil, the natural gas and all the other natural resources in our state. Just as in the old USSR, all the dollars generated from the sale of crude oil, natural gas and other natural resources flow directly into our state central treasury. We then send our Senators, Legislators and a Governor to Juneau to decide just how they want to spend our money, and hope they are guided in those decisions by listening to “we the people” their constituents.
One of the very best ways to make sure all Alaskans receive the benefit of those monies in our central treasury, is for our leaders to set up a system that subsidizes auto gas so that no resident ever pays more than $2.00 per gallon. Those off the highway system would pay $2.00 a gallon plus shipping. Remember, that every time the price of crude oil goes up, which these days is most every week, more and more dollars flow into the state central treasury. All that windfall money coming to the state should be used to subsidize our auto gas.
Even in places like Saudia Arabia and Venzeuela auto gas is subsidized by their governments often keeping the prices of auto gas much lower than $1.00 per gallon.
It’s time to strengthen our statewide economy by making sure no Alaskan resident ever pays more than $2.00 per gallon with shipping charges added to those residents off of the highway system. $2.00 auto gas would be one of the very best ways for “we the people” to benefit equally from the sale of our crude oil.
